      I was caught in this young girl’s gaze.  The waiting was over, and the drums had come to life at the rear of her delegation.  The girls’ polleras (folkloric dress) swayed in rythmn, while the boys, in their montunos (folkloric outfit) danced in place.  The young girl had stood motionless up to that moment, and with her friends anxiously waiting, her dress slowly started to move back and forth.  Then, with some gentle prodding and a big burst of laughter from all the children, the delegation from the Corregimiento de Los Llanos (a district in this rural area) marched their way into the 35th annual Festival del Manito.

     Yo estaba atrapado en la mirada fija de esta jovencita. Había terminado la espera, y los tambores cobraron vida al final de la delegación. Las polleras de las chicas empezaron a moverse al ritmo de los tambores, mientras los chicos con sus montunos bailaban junto a ellas. La jovencita se habia quedado sin mover hasta ese momento y con sus amigos esperando ansiosamente el inicio del desfile, su pollera empezó a ondearse lentamente al compás de los tambores. Con mucho entusiasmo y alegría, la delegación del Corregimiento de Los Llanos marchó hacia su lugar en el Trigésimo quinto Festival del Manito.

     The Festival del Manito is a celebration of the customs and traditions of this region of Spanish descendants.  The parade itself is an effort to bring together the community to remember and honor the rich history of the campesino (country folk) of a time not so long ago. In the way the children from Los Llanos shared this wonderful experience, their parents shared the same experiences when they were their children’s age.  To find old friends again, or to be welcomed by new friends on the street, one can begin to feel the magic that is in Ocu. 

     El Festival del Manito es una celebración de las costumbres y tradiciones de esta región, descendiente de españoles. Este desfile es un esfuerzo de toda la comunidad para recordar y honrar la tradición del campesino de un tiempo lejano. De la misma manera los jóvenes de Los Llanos compartieron esta maravillosa experencia, sus padres participaron de igual forma cuando eran de la misma edad. Encontrándose con viejos amigos, dándoles la bienvenida en la calle a nuevos amigos, uno empieza sentir la magia de estar en Ocú.

      Ocu is located in the center of the Azuero peninsula south of Santiago.  From the capital city of Panama, you’d head west 2 1/2 hours to the town of Aguadulce.  The turnoff to Ocu is roughly half hour from Aguadulce with Ocu being another half hour from the highway.

     Ocu esta ubicado en el centro del Azuero sur de Santiago.  Desde la Capital, irias hacia el interior 2 1/2 horas hasta llegar al pueblo de Aguadulce.  La entrada hacia Ocu queda media hora mas aya de Aguadulce, con media hora mas antes que llegues.

     It was really interesting to watch the particpants arriving and organizing their delegations. 

     Everyone was in place at the advertised 10am start time and the parade was underway at 11am sharp.

     Anyone who has attended an event in Panama knows that to have both a beautiful sunny day during rainy season and to have things running on time is a minor miracle of God.
