Mariato, Coast of Veraguas (Costa Veragüense - Mariato) Part 1

Most people in Panama never venture further west than the beaches of the eastern coast of the Azuero Peninsula.  The beaches on the west coast of the peninsula have a sort of magic feeling to them.  One of the more stunning beaches is called Playa Malena, home to La Tortuga Marina (Turtle Marina), a project to save Panama’s sea turtles.

Most days you might walk all morning and be the only person on the beach. Crystal clear tidal pools offer shallow water swimming and snorkeling, while the waves are great for surfing and boogey-boarding. These beaches also offer the unique opportunity to explore the creatures and wonders that make up the ecosystem of the Gulf of Montijo in a near pristine state.

To reach Mariato from the Capital, you need to continue forward and drive west past the bridge overpass that takes you to Chitre at the town of Divisa.  Before you reach Santiago, you’ll need to turn left and head south to go to the town of Atalaya.  Just  a few dozen meters before reaching Atalaya, there is a turnoff to the right that heads to Mariato.  There’s a chinese store on the left and a sign that says “beaches/playas.”  If you reach the sign that says Atalaya by a school, the IPT, you went a bit too far.

Spanish

The scenic drive takes you through the lush green highlands of Atalaya into the intercoastal region of the Gulf of Montijo and its spectacular beaches.

Playa Reina is situated at the mouth of the Rio Mariato and the Rio Negro, which creates a tidal estuary which is just full of wildlife.  Having two rivers flowing into the same area creates a lot of driftwood.

Looking up the beach towards the Gulf of Montijo, to your left is Isla Cebaco, and just to the left of the point is Isla Leones.

On the left is the Rio Mariato and to the right is the Gulf of Montijo.

Gulf of Montijo on the left, Rio Mariato on the right.

All of these are beautiful pictures. And you are able to speak and write in two languages is just great. It reminds me in some ways of food products in Canada that has two labels - one in English and one in French. Here in the US where I live in southwestern Ohio, we still only use English which is the way it should be but there is a decided influence towards Spanish in some cities but there are so many other nationalities in the same cities that making a change would upset half or more of the local population of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and people from South America. Anyway, I admire people who can speak, read and write in two or more languanges and you do it very well.
