Trip to Cocle del Norte in 360 degree (Gira a Cocle del Norte en 360 grados)
The trip to Cocle del Norte was as beautiful as it was exciting. The guys I accompanied had barely slept the night before the trip. We were to depart Penonome at 4am and make the drive to Coclesito in the dark. This part of the trip should have taken two hours so we’d be ready at the dock in Coclesito by daybreak. From Coclesito we’d take a large dugout canoe for four of us plus the captain. The canoe is made for 15-20 people so we would be comfortable. We’d then float down the river for approx. 4 hours reaching Cocle del Norte before the strong midday sun.
La gira rumbo a Coclé del Norte fue hermosa y excitante. Las personas que acompañé, casi no durmieron la noche antes del paseo. Saldriamos de Penonomé a las 4am para manejar a Coclesito en la madrugada bajo la obscuridad. Esta parte de la excursión debió tomarnos aproximadamente dos horas ya que a las 6am estuvimos listos en el muelle. Desde Coclesito tomamos una panga grande para cuatro personas y el capitán. La panga esta hecha para transportar de 15 a 20 personas, asi que alli estuvimos muy cómodos. Navegamos en el río por más o menos 4 horas, llegando a Coclé del Norte antes del sol de medio día.
It took us more than two hours to reach Coclesito from Penonome in the dark. I had imagined we’d be in a large dugout canoe and floating downriver by 6am. When we arrived about 6:45a.m. there were no large canoes and no working outboard motors. Our captain, named Neri, went to search for an outboard and some fuel. Pre-mixed gasoline costs over $4.00 a gallon. We chatted a bit with one of the locals who invited us in for some coffee before stopping by a small store to stock up on essentials.(toilet paper and medicine) We finally departed Coclesito’s launch dock at about 8:30a.m.
Nos tomó más de dos horas llegar a Coclesito en Penonomé bajo la obscuridad. Me había imaginado que estaríamos en una canoa grande y navegando río abajo a las 6am. Cuando llegamos sobre 6:45 a.m. no había canoas grandes ni motores externos en funcionamiento. El capitán de la expedición, llamado Neri, fue a buscar un poco de combustible. Costos premezclados de la gasolina estaban alrededor de los $4.00 por galón. Charlamos un un poco con los lugareños quienes nos invitaron a tomar un poco de café, luego paramos en un pequeño almacén para surtirnos de materiales esenciales (medicinas, etc.); Nosotros finalmente salimos del muelle hacia Coclesito aproximadamente a las 8:30 a.m..
This is a 360 degree view of the Cocle river from our little dugout canoe. You can see the water level was very high. This worked to our advantage going down the river. The man in front was given a stiff pole to test the water and to drag us along if need be. Due to the amount the river had swollen, we just put the pole away for the rest of the trip.

Esta es una vista de 360 grados del Río Cocle desde nuestra panga. Se puede ver que el nivel del río era muy alto. Esto nos ayudó río abajo. El pasajero del frente se le dió un palo para medir la profundidad del río y palanquiar si lo nesesitabamos. El Río estaba muy crecido y conservamos guardado el palo por el resto de la gira.

After traveling on the river for roughly 3 hours, we made a welcome stop at a very small village call Boca de Toabre (Mouth of the Toabre). The village consists of no more than 20 buildings, mostly huts, but serves as the center of the entire area. There’s a little store, a two-room school house, with part of the school also being the church. You can also see they’re building a new church next door.
Despues viajar más o menos 3 horas, paramos felizmente en un pequeño pueblito llamado Boca de Toabre. El pueblito no tiene más de 20 viviendas, comúnmente en forma de chozas, Aun si, este pueblo sirve como centro del área entera. Allí hay una tiendita, una escuela de dos salones; Parte de esta escuela se ha usado como Iglesia. Se puede ver que tambien constuyen una nueva iglesia a lado.

The trip back from Cocle del Norte was dificult. The going was very slow, due mostly to our outboard motor’s propeller being worn down to nubs from grinding on the river rocks. Also, the swollen river with its heavy current slowed us down to a crawl. Six and half hours in a dugout canoe sitting only on wooden boards is no fun!
El regreso de Cocle del Norte fue muy difícil. El camino fue muy lento, ya que las propelas del motor fuera de borda estaban gastadas de tanto golpear las piedras del río. El río crecido, con su corriente pesada, redujo la velocidad de la panga a “paso de tortuga”. Seis horas y media sentados en pedazos de madera no fue divertido!
