     Even before daybreak, you will see traffic on the rivers and creeks that feed the Cocle river.  Distances here are measured in time; one hour by foot, half hour by horse, 15 minutes by canoe.  The rivers and streams are the roads and highways of this area, carrying goods upriver from Cocle del Norte to Coclesito. 

     This woman heads downriver to trade for the items she needs to make the day’s meals.

         Antes amanezca, se puede ver tránsito en los ríos y quebradas que se unen con el Río Coclé.  Las distancias en esta área se dan en unidades de tiempo; una hora a pie, media hora a caballo, 15 minutos en lancha.  Los Ríos y quebradas son las carreteras y vías de esta área, permitiendo el tránsito de mercancía desde Coclé del Norte hasta Coclesito.

     Esta mujer baja el río para intercambiar lo que necesita con otras, y tener con que hacer su comida del día.

    This young girl helps her mother with the laundry.  Washing clothes is hard work, especially if you have to carry the clothes back up a large hill to the house.

     Esta jovencita ayuda a lavar ropa a su madre.  Lavar ropa es un trabajo difícil, especialmente si tienes que subir una loma con toda la ropa para llegar a la casa.

     A mother paddles upriver with her children.  Women will paddle canoes, same as the men. There are some areas where the current is really strong, and yet you’ll see women paddling against the current with no problems.

     Una madre remando con sus hijos.  Mujeres reman pangitas, igual que los hombres.  Hay áreas donde la corriente es fuerte, pero aun asi las mujeres reman contra la corriente sin problemas.

     Children smile and wave as they play in the river.  The water is cool and refreshing. These rivers are fed from streams up in the mountains.

     Jóvenes sonrien y saludan mientras juegan en el río.  Las aguas son frías y refrescantes.  Estos ríos son alimentados por quebradas que vienen desde las montañas.

     A mother paddles her children to the store down the river.  The store was located about half hour away by outboard powered dugout canoe.

     Una madre rema con sus hijos rumbo a la tienda que esta bajando el río.  La tienda está ubicada más o menos media hora de distancia de este lugar, usando una panga con motor fuera de borda.

     Children play as they bathe in the river.  These two were so eager to jump in the river they forgot their clothes at their house, about a quarter-mile away up on a big hill behind them.  Their sister was carrying the clothes down to them.

         Jóvenes juegan mientras se bañan en el río.  Estos dos jóvenes, estaban tan ansiosos de tirarse al río que se les quedo la ropa en su casa, ubicada aproximadamente a un cuarto de milla de distancia encima de una gran loma.  Su hermana les trajo la ropa.

     A family keeps the mother company as she washes clothes on the river.  The father watches over the baby in the canoe as the older children play in the water.

     Una familia acompaña a la madre mientras ella lava ropa en el río.  El padre cuida el bebé en la pangita mientras los jóvenes juegan en el río.

     A young boy takes a break from paddling up the river to check us out as we motor on by him in our boat.

     These young boys playfully try and tip each other’s canoes over as they race on the river.
